BJP President JP Nadda on Friday stressed that his party and the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi are committed to the issue of reservation. Nadda’s statement came at a time when the Supreme Court had said a day before that reservation is not a fundamental right. On the other hand, Union Minister and LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan has demanded that all the legislation related to reservation be put in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution so that it cannot be challenged legally.
BJP President Nadda said in a statement, ‘Some people are trying to create confusion in society about reservation. We are in favor of reservation. The Modi government and BJP are fully committed to reservation. We are committed to social justice. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly repeated this pledge. Our priority is social harmony and providing equal opportunities to all.
On the other hand, Paswan said that reservation for people belonging to scheduled castes and tribes, other backward classes and general caste people in government jobs and education may not be a fundamental right, but it is a constitutional right. He expressed displeasure over the controversy arising over the issue of reservation, saying that the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were provided reservation under the Poona Pact between BR Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi.
