What is renewable energy? A renewable energy means energy that is sustainable or something that is endless. This renewable energy is collected from renewable resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and geothermal heat. Renewable energy provides energy for four sectors i.e. electricity generation, air and water heating, transportation, and rural energy services.
The most popular sources of renewable energy or types of renewable energy are:
- Solar energy
- Tidal energy
- Wind energy
- Hydro energy
- Biomass energy
- Geothermal energy
What is renewable energy
Solar Energy
Sunlight is a freely available energy resource. The amount of solar energy that reaches the earth’s surface in one hour is more than the planet’s total energy requirements for a whole year. Solar energy is the light that comes from the sun. Sun’s energy is harnessed in different ways like Photovoltaic cells, which convert sunlight into electricity.
Wind Energy
The wind is caused by uneven heating of the atmosphere by the sun and rotation of the earth. Mountains, water bodies, and vegetation are the factors of wind flow. Wind turbines convert the wind energy to electricity by rotating propeller-like blades around a rotor.

Tidal Energy
Tidal energy converts the energy obtained from tides into electricity. Studies say that tidal energy has the potential for future electricity generation. Tides are highly predictable and can, therefore, compensate for the periods when the tide current is low.
Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is derived within the sub-surface of the earth and the water carries geothermal energy to Earth’s surface. Geothermal energy is used for heating and cooling purposes and to generate electricity.

Biomass Energy
Biomass Energy is made from plant materials and turned into electricity. This type of energy is generated by converting agricultural, industrial and domestic waste into solid, liquid and gas fuel. It generates power at a very low cost.
Hydro Energy
Hydroelectric energy, also known as hydroelectric power harnesses the power of water in motion such as water flowing over a waterfall or dam. For example, by building a dam, a large reservoir can be used to create a flow of water that will drive a turbine and will generate electricity.
