The Styling You Annual Swimsuit Edition 2020 (as featured in Body & Soul)

[ad_1]

The Styling You Annual Swimsuit Edition 2020 looks a little different. Actually A LOT different. Not only was it featured in Sunday newspapers around Australia (hello, if you’ve found yourself here for the first time after reading the feature in Body & Soul/Stellar magazine), I’ve enlisted the help of six other women to showcase swimwear on more body shapes than just mine.

I’m passionate about helping you get out of the way of your internal critic and into a swimsuit. I’ve been so vocal about this for seven years (the first Styling You Swimsuit Edition appeared here on the blog in 2013). And I’ve put my body on the line and on this blog every year since.

Do I like being photographed in a swimsuit? Definitely not one of my favourite past-times. Am I 100% body confident? Not even close. I probably struggle to reach 70% most days.

What I am is determined. Determined to lift my percentage of daily body positive thoughts – it really is like working a muscle – and determined to help YOU lift that percentage too. It’s not easy. It’s not like you can flick some magic switch and suddenly you’re deeply accepting and loving of every bit of your body. There is a lot of conditioning that’s been laid down in our heads from a very early age about how someone should look if they dare to go to the beach or jump in a pool in front of other people.

Women of my generation have grown up with magazines making us feel “less” because we don’t look a certain way. Or less because we weren’t dieting to try and look a certain way. We grew up with “well-meaning” family members making comments about our weight. Hurtful comments that still cut deep. Now that WE are mothers, step-mothers, grandmothers and aunties, it really is up to us to break those generational damaging patterns and beliefs. I want my daughter and any future granddaughters to grow up loving what their body can do, not entering into some dysfunctional relationship with it based purely on looks.

Whether you’ve read every single one of my Swimsuit Editions, or if this is your first, I ask you to not let this summer go by, sitting on the sand or the side of the pool. Life’s too short. Get in a swimsuit that gives you a few extra body-positive percentage points and make a splash.

Remember! You have a body. It IS beach ready.

Do also check out each of the independent swimwear labels they’re wearing. Each of the labels chosen for this feature actively promotes the same swimsuit messages I do.

I’d love to also send a shout to Marvel Lane Swimwear (which I featured HERE) and Infamous Swim (which I featured HERE)

More than ever, small independent labels need our support. You’ll also find amazing women behind these labels giving incredible customer support and advice. Reach out to them for help with sizing and styles.

What’s my typical summer swimsuit style and why?

I love a bikini style, combined with a sun-safe rashie. The bikini is convenient for popping under a dress or cover-up and being able to head to the toilet! When out of the shade, I pop on a rashie for swimming in the pool or at the beach. I’ve got pale skin (that I regularly spray tan!) and grew up in Queensland. Being sun-safe was embedded in my psyche from a small child.

What’s the one piece of advice I’d tell another woman if they’re anxious about being in a swimsuit in public?

This is my eighth annual Swimsuit Edition and I’ve shared lots of advice on this topic over the years. The one thing I keep coming back to is that we need to get over ourselves and our internal, negative dialogue. It’s a work in progress but, honestly, we are our own worst critics. No-one gives a hoot about how we look in a swimsuit. Sadly, they’re busy worrying about themselves.

Why do I love the swimsuit I wore for this shoot?

Apart from the gorgeous print, I love that my D Cup bust is supported (there’s underwire in this style)and that the high neckline of the top gives sun protection across my chest. This style is super flattering on the shoulders and arms. The zip-up rashie makes it easy to pop on for a swim in the surf.

What’s your typical summer swimsuit style and why?

I need something that I feel comfortable in and that’s functional as I’m breastfeeding (my 7 month old) and running around after my 4 year old!

What’s the one piece of advice you’d tell another woman if they’re anxious about being in a swimsuit in public?

No one else is looking at you! Seriously! They’re all too busy worrying about their own swimsuit, their kids or if they remembered to put sunscreen on the top of their feet etc. Put the swimsuit on and enjoy yourself. It’s cliche but life is too short to miss out on the fun of the beach/pool!

Why do you love the swimsuit you wore for this shoot?

I love the flutter sleeve and the zip at the front. The perfect mix of functional and flattering!

What’s your typical summer swimsuit style and why?

I love mixing it up with my swimwear but I would say I’m a sucker for a good bikini! I love bright, block colours or beautiful prints and mixing and matching them. And I can’t go past a staple, black piece either. It’s been fun to discover different cuts of swimwear that I like and perhaps would never previously have felt confident to wear. I also love to carry a Turkish towel with me to the beach or pool as it can double as a sarong or dress when needed and dries super fast!

What’s the one piece of advice you’d tell another woman if they’re anxious about being in a swimsuit in public?

One thing I was told, that has stuck with me, is that other people are often too concerned about what they themselves look like to be worried about you. It’s a sad thought but, unfortunately, I think it’s very true. I would also say that by strutting your stuff on the beach or by the pool, you are giving every other woman or girl who sees you permission to love themselves and be confident in their own bodies that little bit more.

Why do you love the swimsuit you wore for this shoot?

As someone with a bigger lower half and hips I tend to choose higher waisted bikinis, but when Sophie (Saint Somebody designer) suggested that these bottoms would suit me I gave them a go! I fell in love with the cut and how flattering they were. It actually can be very flattering to have a cheekier cut on the bottoms if you have a larger behind, instead of covering it all up! I wanted to show women that being curvier doesn’t mean you have to cover up! You get to wear whatever style YOU feel amazing in. If that means a one piece with sleeves, fantastic! If that means a string bikini, go you!

Stacey McGregor, @stace_mcgregs wearing Capriosca

35, curve model and stylist

What’s your typical summer swimsuit style and why?

I like a range of different styles. A common theme in my swimsuit choices is an element of sun safety, particularly coverage on the shoulders, if a two-piece, I always opt for high waist bottoms, the higher the better.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d tell another woman if they’re anxious about being in a swimsuit in public?

Go to the beach and take photos with your kids, friends and family. You don’t have to post those photos on social media, but keep them. Because at the time we may be quite self critical, but when we look back on those photos and now memories, it will be with kinder eyes, and instead of criticising our looks (which a lot of us do) we will look back and say “gosh remember how long my hair used to be”, or “oh what fun we had that day”, but you can’t do that without going, and without being in the photos. Don’t sit on the side lines. Life is for living.

Why do you love the swimsuit you wore for this shoot?

I love the vintage vibe of my suit. I felt like an 1940’s pink up. The polka dot print, the high waist bottoms and the wrap top – so much to love. I also love the shoulder coverage from a sun safety perspective.

What’s your typical summer swimsuit style and why?
I wear a burqni because of my modest requirements but I like something with a pop of colour that is also comfy to wear.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d tell another woman if they’re anxious about being in a swimsuit in public?

Just because we need more fabric than everyone else doesn’t mean we should miss out. With so many great options for modest swimwear these days we can still be covered while looking stylish. Australia has some of the best beaches in the world so let’s get out there and enjoy it instead of watching from the sidelines.

Why do you love the swimsuit you wore?

I love that it meets my requirements for coverage, is sun safe, comfortable and colourful.

* We had ordered a swimsuit from Madamm BK in France but it didn’t arrive in time for the photoshoot. We’ve since also discovered Australian modest labels Azya Swim and Noor Swimwear (launching soon).

Lisa Cox, @lisacox.co wearing Ellenny Swim

40, a media professional and sometimes disabled model

What’s your typical summer swimsuit style and why?
I have sun damage from decades of outdoor sports and activities so I like a bit more coverage that also allows ease of movement when I swim laps in my pool.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d tell another woman if they’re anxious about being in a swimsuit in public?

Remember that ALL bodies are beautiful and remind yourself of all the amazing things your body has achieved (like growing little humans or getting you through uni exams, for example) rather than comparing yourself to others.

Why do you love the swimsuit you wore?
The print is absolutely divine and it was very easy to slip into.

Sonia Koroma, @sonish_space wearing Baiia

32, compliance officer at a stockbroking firm

What’s your typical summer swimsuit style and why?

I honestly will wear any style, but love a two-piece, high-waisted swimsuit have a bit of an edge. I love this style because it accentuate my curves which I love.

What’s the one piece of advice you’d tell another woman if they’re anxious about being in a swimsuit in public?

Firstly, make peace with your body. Love and embrace what makes your body unique (flaws and all). Then go forth and rock what makes you feel beautiful, comfortable and confident (keyword “YOU”).

Why do you love the swimsuit you wore?

I love this swimsuit because it’s a two-piece high waisted which is my style, it’s reversible and the colour makes me look and feel glamorous.
