While 2020 was a year of big changes for the world. But you know who wasn’t phased hardly at all? Florida Man. The ubiquitous everyman of white-trash hijinks got up to just as much during a pandemic as he usually did. Of course, there’s not only one overworked Florida Man making all the poor decisions in the strangest state in the lower 48. Instead, it’s a title given to anyone who breaks past local news to garner national attention–often stories involving wild animals or law enforcement.
Here are six of the craziest Florida Man stories from the past year.
-
Dog, briefly swallowed by alligator, becomes sheriff’s deputy.
We reported on this story back in December when a juvenile alligator attacked Gunner, a four-month-old King Charles Spaniel. His quick-thinking owner, Richard Wilbanks, dropped his morning Bloody Mary (but not his cigar) and ran into the water to pry open the jaws of the reptile to save his puppy. Gunner, now a detective, will educate school children about safety and security.
-
Florida man live-streams his arrest.
A Marion County resident rented a jet ski, apparently unaware there was a warrant out for his arrest for a parole violation. He was live-streaming his afternoon when public safety officers swarmed him and later discovered drugs, guns, and cash in his car. It made the live-stream much more interesting.

There’s a lot of controversy about the effectiveness of the COVID relief payments issued by the government. Stories like this make you wonder how many people got away with something similar without the authorities noticing. The 29-year-old man received 3.5 million in money from the Paycheck Protection Program. He used it not for paying employees but buying a $310,000 Lamborghini and other luxury goods.
-
Man pays $150 to be mauled by a leopard.
We brought you this story back in November, about a Florida Man who paid for a “full contact” big-cat experience getting more than he expected. He expected a few pictures for his Tinder profile. Instead, the black leopard mauled him as soon as he entered the enclosure.
-
Man buys a Porsche 911 with check printed on his home computer.
Here’s the thing about Florida Man–his ideas are sometimes so insane they work. A man printed out a series of cashier’s checks on his home printer. He first bought a Porsche 911, no problem. He wasn’t satisfied with his free car and tried to buy a Rolex next. They noticed the bad check and called the authorities.
-
Florida man hospitalized following bicycle crash with iguana.
The most extraordinary, most-Florida story of the year goes to a 62-year-old man who ran into an iguana with his bicycle. His front tire dragged the reptile into the front fork of his bike when the little guy darted in front of him. After the bicycle seized up, the man went over the handlebars and sustained moderate cuts and bruises. The iguana died.
