The City of Surrey in British Columbia, Canada has received a development application for a new $1.34bn (C$1.66bn) hospital to be located in Cloverdale.
Planning and permitting process is currently underway for Surrey’s second hospital which will be built beside the Kwantlen Polytechnic University campus at 5510 180 St.
This new hospital, with an integrated cancer centre, is expected to be the largest provincial contribution to a health care project in the history of British Columbia.
Construction is slated to start in 2023 and completed by 2027.
Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum said: “With the development process now officially underway, Surrey residents will soon have a second hospital to serve our growing city.
“I want to thank and applaud Minister Dix and the province for taking action on this much needed project.
“I want to assure Minister Dix that the City of Surrey will do everything in its part to fast track this development so it can be shovel ready as soon as possible.”
In December 2019, the British Columbia government announced that Surrey would get another hospital to serve its growing population.
The hospital will have inpatient beds, an emergency department, operating rooms, laboratory and diagnostic services, and outpatient services.
It is part of work underway to deliver comprehensive health services for people in Surrey, which include a new urgent and primary care centre, a new mental health and substance use urgent care response centre, among others.
Additionally, the second Surrey hospital is one of 13 major health capital projects announced under the British Columbia government.
