Nirav Modi’s sister, brother-in-law seek recall of warrants

[ad_1]

Mumbai: The sister and brother-in-law of fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) multi-crore fraud case, have sought before a special court on Friday that warrants issued against them by the court in July 2018 be recalled.

Purvi Modi and her husband Maiank Mehta, both also accused in the case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for their alleged role in being party to laundering the proceeds of crime, are also absconding. They made the application for relief before the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court through their advocates.

The couple has sought relief in view of the order passed by the court in January this year accepting their request to be made prosecution witnesses in the case. Earlier, they had made a similar plea for the cancellation of non-bailable warrants (NBW) issued by the court against them.

In November last year, the couple had approached the court for tender of pardon and sought to be made approvers in the case. In her plea seeking tender of pardon under the CrPC, Purvi Modi had said that on account of being Nirav’s sister she is in a unique position to be able to provide important evidence, access to bank accounts, entities relevant to Nirav Modi and his dealings. She undertook to be examined as a witness.

The court had allowed their pleas on 4 January on the condition that they make full disclosure of circumstances in their knowledge.
