Nashville PRIDE salutes the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Black athletesPart One – the female athletes who qualified for Team USA

Simone Biles and her USA women’s gymnastics teammates will be staying in a Tokyo hotel separate from the Olympic Village due to rising COVID19 concerns.

In total, 627 athletes have qualified for the U.S. Olympic team for the Games to be played in Tokyo, Japan from Friday, July 23 through Sunday, August 8, 2021. We wish them all well, but will present once again our exclusive two-part feature on the African Americans who are competing; this week, ladies first.

Basketball

This year, the women’s basketball program can bring home medals in three-on-three basketball with Kelsey Plum, Allisha Gray, and Katie Lou Samuelson competing. The women’s basketball roster includes Ariel Atkins, Tina Charles, Napheesa Collier, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Sylvia Fowles, Chelsea Gray, Brittney Griner, Jewell Loyd, and A’ja Wilson.

Boxing

Rashida Ellis (Lightweight), Naomi Graham (Middleweight) and Oshae Jones (Welterweight) will compete.

Gymnastics

Monday, July 19 it was reported that an alternate on the United States women’s gymnastics team had tested COVID-19 positive in a Japan training camp. At press time, it was unclear if Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, and the rest of the USA gymnastics team would have to isolate as a result.

Rugby

Team USA, with Naya Tapper and Cheta Emba, can bring home its first gold medal in women’s rugby.

Soccer

Crystal Dunn and Adriann French are looking to help Team USA to Gold.

Softball

Team USA enters Tokyo, Japan as the heavy favorite, with Michelle Moultrie and Kelsey Stewart on the roster.

Swimming

Simone Manuel battled through depression and physical injuries to qualify for the 50-meter freestyle. Natalie Hinds is making her Olympic dreams come true at 27 years old. Ashleigh Johnson is on the women’s water polo roster.

Tennis

Tennis champion Cori “Coco” Gauff was seeking her first gold medal in this event, but announced on Sunday, July 18 that she would be missing the Tokyo Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19. Tennis champion Serena Williams had announced Monday, June 28 that she would decline her spot on the tennis roster; thus this will be the first Olympic Games since 1996 with neither she nor her sister Venus Williams in competition. Naomi Osaka will be seeking a gold medal for the host nation of Japan as a member of their Japanese Olympic team, not Team USA.

Track & Field

Sha’Carri Richardson tested positive for cannabis and was barred from competing. The women’s track and field roster includes Anavia Battle, Gwen Berry, Erica Bougard, Quanesha Burks, Christina Clemons, Anna Cockrell, Vashti Cunningham, Teahna Daniels, Tara Davis, Kendall Ellis, Allyson Felix, Tori Franklin, English Gardner, Kendra Harrison, Quanera Hayes, Lynna Irby, Wadeline Jonathas, Sally Kipyego, Taylor Manson, Sydney McLaughlin, Jasmine Moore, Athing Mu, Dalilah Muhammad, Javianne Oliver, Keturah Orji, Jessica Ramsey, Brittney Reese, Raevyn Rogers, Raven Saunders, Gabby Thomas, Aliphine Tuliamuk, Kaylin Whitney, Kendall Williams, Ajeé Wilson, and Deja Young.

Volleyball

The women’s roster includes Foluke Akinradewo Gunderson, Chiaka Ogbogu, Jordan Thompson, and Haleigh Washington.

Wrestling

Tamyra Mensah-Stock in the 68kg and Jacarra Winchester in the 53kg compete in womens’s freestyle.
