Neeraj Chopra, who was considered a medal contender from the beginning, had told in the qualification itself not to make the mistake of taking him lightly. He threw 86.65 meters in the qualifying round. He also qualified there by throwing the javelin once.
Neeraj made his first throw of 87.03m in the javelin throw final on Saturday. Neeraj improved his throw in the second attempt and threw the javelin 87.58 meters away. This was enough to seal his gold medal. No other athlete could touch it.
Neeraj could only throw 76.79 meters in the third attempt while fouled in the fourth and fifth attempts. He threw 84.24 meters in his sixth attempt. No one got around to his first throw.
In the final match, Czech Republic's Jakub Vadlech won the silver with 86.67m and his country's Vitjeslav Vesli won the bronze with a javelin throw of 85.44m.
Neeraj Chopra was honored with the Arjuna Award in 2018. He has been serving in the Indian Army since 2016 and is currently serving as a Subedar in the Rajputana Rifles Unit of the Army. He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) at the 2020 Republic Day celebrations.
