Devotees welcomed Lord Ganesh in their homes and public pandals on Friday as the 10-day festival dedicated to the elephant-headed God began in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra with focus on online ‘darshan’ amid the coronavirus pandemic and looming threat of a third wave. For the second straight year, the pandemic cast a long shadow on festivities with the Maharashtra government placing a slew of restrictions to avoid gathering and processions.

But don’t worry in case you are not able to visit pandal for darshan of Lord Ganesha. Here you can watch live aarti and puja of Mumbai’s Siddhivinayak Temple, one of the most popular religious sites not only for Mumbaikars, but also for millions of tourists visiting the city from various parts of the country and world.

This year the celebration started on September 10 and will continue till September 21. The celebration started off with people welcoming Lord Ganesha into their houses and locality by installing an idol of him. While some people celebrate it for only two days, others celebrate the festival for 10 days where farewell is given to Lord Ganesha on Anant Chaturdashi with hopes of welcoming him next year. Devotees offer prasad of Lord Ganesha’s favourite sweet Modak.

In Mumbai, there are around 12,000 sarvajanik (community) mandals and nearly two lakh homes where idols of the deity are installed. The usual pomp is missing this year since processions have been banned. Lord Ganesh made a quiet entry into the homes of his devotees.
