Welcome to Watches of the Week, where we'll track the rarest, wildest, and most covetable watches spotted on celebrities.
It’s easy to get caught up in the world vintage watches. They dominate conversations in the form of Tyler, the Creator’s Cartier Crash or Ed Sheeran’s charmingly retro Rolex GMT. But Roger Federer knows that sometimes nothing measures up to a brand-new creation that’s just slipped out of the manufacture. After his Wimbledon match against Hubert Hurkacz, Federer was seen wearing one of Rolex’s 2020 releases: an Oyster Perpetual with a deep, forest green dial. Federer, a Rolex ambassador, is clearly a fan of the new pieces. He wore a different version of the Oyster Perpetual, with a sunflower yellow dial, earlier in the tournament. And if the celebs are any indication, these watches have become particularly covetable—Bryan Cranston also wore one, with a reddish-orange dial, to a Brooklyn Nets game last month, trailing not far behind LeBron James. Also this week, Adam Driver, Spike Lee’s customized Rolex, and the watch that’s Bringing It Home for Garrett Southgate.
Roger Federer’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual
The watch is new, but the inspiration is old. The colorful new Oyster Perpetuals Federer’s been wearing are a callback to a famous collection of Rolex watches from the ‘80s with so-called “Stella” dials. The “Stella” moniker came about because it was the name of the party responsible for supplying these dials back in their heyday. Surely, Federer will have no problem bringing his own provenance and patina to this new piece.
Adam Driver’s Breitling Super Chronomat B01 44
Last year, Breitling relaunched its handsome Chronomat line. The watch was originally released in 1984, inspired by a piece the brand made just a year earlier for the Italian Frecce Tricolori squadron (think of it as the US equivalent of the Blue Angels, just with more waxed mustaches). Driver’s watch is the Super Chronomat, a piece launched just this year that kicks everything about the original up a notch. Most importantly, the watch is just flat-out bigger, which is essential for the very large Driver.
Spike Lee’s custom Rolex Daytona
Lee has a little something très bon for the Cannes Film Festival. The watch is basically a Rolex Daytona in name only. This one gets a makeover courtesy of Artisans de Genève, a house that tweaks Rolexes for famous clientele like Lenny Kravitz and Andrea Pirlo. Lee is wearing a slightly different version of the watch than the one pictured above: along with the skeletonized dial and bright orange accents his combines a stainless steel case with a rose-gold movement. This isn’t Lee’s first hookup with Artisans de Genève. In 2017, the pair collaborated on a “Cool Hand Brooklyn” Daytona in New York Knicks colors.
The Weeknd’s Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept “Black Panther”
The Weeknd joins the superteam of celebrities who own the new Black Panther-inspired Royal Oak. He now shares the honor with LeBron James, Draymond Green, and soccer players Neymar, Virgil Van Dijk, and Memphis Depay. This watch is pretty limited, so these athletes constitute a not-insignificant chunk of all the Black Panther Royal Oaks in the world.
As the Weeknd showed off on his Instagram story, the watch even arrives in a box that looks like it should house the latest tech from Wakanda.
Gareth Southgate’s Big Bang E UEFA Euro 2020
This is a little bit like wearing a band’s tee to their concert, but Southgate’s probably earned a pass on this one. The manager of the English national team has taken the Three Lions all the way to the Euro final, and led his team to victory over Denmark while wearing this special-edition Big Bang. The smartwatch’s bezel features the flags of the 12 countries who were originally set to host the tournament before the pandemic (Dublin was forced to relinquish hosting duties, so technically the event spanned 11 countries). The watch is dedicated to tracking the tourney’s matches and is able to display live times along with goals, penalties, and substitutions. Now, Southgate will know with absolute certainty what time It’s Coming Home.
